Independent writer and curator Francis McWhannell looks at five artists with a commitment to community and compassion.
These five artists from Aotearoa New Zealand span different generations and backgrounds, and employ diverse media in their respective practices. They were initially chosen for the simple reason that their works caught my attention and refused to let go. However, points of commonality are discernible when one looks a little closer.
The artists all make work that is distinctly poetic and emotionally potent. All explore politics of identity, variously touching on questions of feminism, indigeneity, and queerness. Perhaps most importantly, all honour and speak to the communities with which they are associated, opening up spaces for all who encounter their works to engage in compassionate reflection. …
